Before you Begin

Ensure both the hydrometer and the testing jar are clean and free from residue.
Let your liquid reach room temperature before testing, as temperature affects accuracy.
Slowly pour the liquid down the inside wall of the jar to prevent air bubbles.
Gently stir the liquid, avoiding splashing or bubbles.

02

Taking the Reading

Carefully lower the hydrometer into the liquid, holding it at the top of the stem.
Let it settle naturally. Then gently press it down a few millimetres and release it.
It should float freely and settle after a few gentle bounces.
If the surface of the liquid (the meniscus) looks uneven or dragged, clean the hydrometer again—this means the surface isn’t clean enough for a correct reading.
Take reading at the bottom —this is the flat surface level, not where the liquid clings to the glass.
Make sure the hydrometer is not touching the sides of the jar and that you’re looking straight across at the scale (not from above or below).

03

Measuring Temperature

Use a thermometer to check the liquid’s temperature right after taking the reading.
If the temperature is different from the hydrometer’s calibration temperature (usually 20°C), apply a temperature correction to the reading.
For best results, ensure temperature stays stable — if it changes more than 1°C during the process, allow the liquid to settle and recheck.

04

Handling Tips

Only hold the hydrometer at the top of the stem, and only when necessary.
Avoid touching the lower part of the stem, as fingerprints or residue can affect accuracy.
Handle with care — hydrometers are precision instruments and can be fragile.
